Phases of Woman

The Goddess is seen as having three aspects that correspond to the three phases of the moon, and as women, we also share these aspects in the passing of our lives. They are the Maiden or waxing (rising) moon, the Mother or full moon, and the Crone or waning moon.

Maiden -  the innocent child-virgin who is always growing as she receives knowledge.She acts on instinct and by her particular desire at that time, which can sometimes lead to excess. Self control has yet to be learnt; she mostly runs free in a joyful and excited burst of energy.She brings the clear light of dawn and the promise of new beginnings, seen as the first shoots of spring, new leaves, lambs and eggs. In some cultures this independent lover of freedom is known as the Lady of the Wild Things and her time is that of hunting rituals. She carries a crescent shaped horn, taken form the cow or bull. Most often represented as Diana or Artemis, the young virgin goddess who carries a bow to represent the crescent of the new moon.

Mother - She is the Great Earth Mother present in all women, and has given birth to the child whom she patiently and carefully nurtures and encourage to grow. She is the Creatress in all things; of new life, artwork and magick. From her comes our freedom of decision to act in the way we choose; to be fertile or not for this cycle. Her time is the full, ripe Full Moon and witches have found this to be a time of great power for working magick. Here she is the Goddess of the Harvest, the Great Corn Mother who blesses the earth with plentiful nourishment. we call upon her as Selene or Yemaya and work with the power of cycles and rhythms, psychic opening and intuition.

Crone - the Crone is the Wise Woman, the Elder, who no longer bleeds or gives birth. Both Maiden and Mother are within her and she maintains that balance. She guides our inner selves and lends a gentle but probing illumination to our Shadow side so that we may examine our hidden fears and dreams. Hers is the great wisdom of life experience; wisdom rich with insight and trust in the Self. Her time is the diminishing crescent of the Waning Moon and as her energies wane she disappears into death or the Dark of the Moon. We call upon Hecate at this time. She will soon be reborn as the young, vital Maiden in the eternal wheel of life.
