Ostara - The Spring Equinox

The Spring or Vernal Equinox - March 21-23 - is a time of renewal and rebirth, and is the halfway point between winter and summer. Days and nights are of equal length and the year is waxing into warmth, fertility and light. Ostara is the Anglo Saxon Goddess of Spring (also known as Oestre or Eostre) to whom offerings of cakes and colored eggs were made, and from where we get the more recent name of Easter. The Goddess is a young maiden and meets the god on equal terms. This is the time for new lambs, chicks, calves, babies and little children; plants awaken and buds burst into bloom, the buzz of insects fill the air, tadpoles are born, the sap flows and the earth opens fully to new life energy. The rhythm of life picks up; we spring clean our closets, altars and psyches and dust the cobwebs from our house and mind.

The most pervasive symbol, of course, is the egg. Eggs are the Spring's primary symbol for fertility and fecundity, and also for the Great Cosmic egg of the Goddess from which the earth and universe were hatched. Since antiquity they have been held in reverence as sacred objects of new and eternal life, decorated to honor the deities, placed on altars and given as cherished spring gifts. Scarlet eggs particularly, are symbols of regenerative power and the Hot Cross Bun with its X of white icing, has its origin in the Sun Wheel a symbol of perfect balance at the equinox.

Ceremonies involve reclaimimg and healing negative aspects of childhood, set goals, plant wishes as seeds, dye and decorate eggs, make Hot Cross Buns with runic symbols, leaving and re-entering circle to represent rebirth.

Candles are green for new growth, incense is rose/mugwort, altar cloth is pastel/flowered.  Traditional foods are cheeses, honey cake and ham and of course, egg dishes.
