Midsummer Solstice - June 21-23 - Power of the Sun - longest day, shortest night. The Goddess is now a mother at at her most abundant - crops are in full bloom, midpoint of growing season. Time for gathering of herbs, berries for preserving. Much work in the fields, the grain is forming on the stalk and ear. Month of the Mead Moon - honey fills the hives. Mead is considered to have life restoring properties. Many feasts throughout June - outdoor games, fairs, Morris Men dancing to rep. the union of sky and earth, of growth, the successful hunt and weather magick. Bonfires lit to celebrate the Sun at its zenith and to implore him not to return too soon to darkness again. Processions encircled the fields, marking boundaries and blessing the crops. Houses decorated with flowers - protection amulets and Solar Wheels made. Celebrations begin at sunrise, greeting the dawn with singing. The goddess is pregnant with life yet preparing to enter into the Underworld as the sun will now begin to wane. The God is at the height of his power, yet soon will die and begin his journey westward to the Land of Avalon or the Summerlands where he will wait for her. Ceremonies involve giveaways/personal sacrifices and wish making to symbolize fulfillment, acknowledging of accomplishments, making of Solar Wheels and protection amulets, animal blessings, dreams for the planet, emphasis is on balance in our lives and celebrating our power as women in a positive not dominating way.
