Lammas or Lughnasad

Green and Gold Festival - August 1

First of 3 harvests; Lunasa comes from the Irish meaning August; honors the harvest of the grain. The Anglo Saxons called this festival Hlafmas or Loaf Mass; the Celts, Lugnasad - the Sun God Lugh was the spirit of the growing corn. Days begin to shorten and nights begin to lengthen but weather is still hot and the sun still present. Ancient festival involving the sacrifice of the Sun God symbolized by reaping the corn and buried (planted) so he could rise again from the dead s a new crop.  From the last sheaf of corn, the Dolly is made; the old one from the previous year is burnt.  Bread figures of the Sun God are made and eaten to internalize the deity and grant everlasting life. Grain ales are made and dedicated to the God in his aspect as Harvest Lord or John Barleycorn. The goddess continues to give of her bounty but all growth is ended upon the Earth.

Ceremonies symbolize the thread of life being spun, measured and cut, remembering the wishes at made at Summer Solstice which should be beginning to take effect, celebrating the closeness to the earth and the first harvest, making Corn Dollies, banishing fears, harvesting hopes.Candles are green and gold, incense is frankincense/lavender, altar cloth is green/gold. Traditional foods are breads, cornbread, honey cakes, berries and pies, grain ales.
