Imbolc

The Quickening - February 1st - Imbolc, Imbolg or Oimelc, means "new lambs" or "in milk" and prepares for the approaching birth of the Spring Goddess; the new gestation of world spirit within the Mother Earth. The promised child moves within the womb of the Goddess as the seed germinates in the ground. It is a fire festival with Brigid/Brigit, the Irish goddess of fire and inspiration being its patroness saint. She is the very essence of the Triple Goddess; in this instance of poetry, smith craft and the healing arts. Part of the festival is given to the Bride’s Bed, in which lies the corn dolly from Lammas; Lammas lies opposite Imbolc on the pagan Wheel of the Year. The corn mother has been resting in the Land of  Spirit to rejuvenate and regain her youth - now she is the maiden again awaiting the lusty young god.   Another tradition on Imbolc Eve was to leave a slice of buttered bread on the butter churn as an offering to the Goddess who presides over the production of milk  When the sun rises on the morning of Imbolc, the greens of Yule adorning the front door are removed and replaced by 3 ears of corn to symbolize the Goddess in her triple aspect. Imbolc is also known as Candlemas, a name that derived from the practice of ritually lighting fires to lure back the slowly waxing sun.

Rituals revolve around new beginnings, spiritual growth, initiations (espec. to covens), self dedication, purification, making and blessing of candles to be used for the year, sweeping out of the old with brooms, namings, burning of the last of the Yule greenery to rid ourselves of the last vestiges of  winter. Candles are white for the Maiden - candle wheels are made containing 8 candles, one for each of the Sabbats. Incense is myrtle wood, sandalwood. Altar cloth is  white. The Corn Dolly is dressed in white as the image of Brigit as the Bride awaiting the God.

The traditional foods of Imbolc are round in shape or contain honey and milk. Pancakes or waffles, usually made with rich cream are still a Swedish tradition, especially on farms and in the Lapland where sheep, goats and deer form the basis of the ceremony. The Honey Cake is a French Imbolc desert with Middle Eastern origins. Because of the Sabbat’s association with ewe’s lactation, milk is also a featured item at the feast., and symbolizes new beginnings, spiritual growth, initiation and self dedication.
