Beltane - May Day

The Red Ritual - May 1. This is the height of fertility, the Feast of Flowers, a celebration of earth's passion to bloom and bear fruit. The blooming of the Hawthorn marked the final transition from winter to summer - brightness and abundance everywhere. Word Beltane comes from  Bel; an ancient sun God closely associated with Baal meaning Lord in Phoenician, and Tan; Celtic for fire. It is the last Sabbat of the waxing year - celebrates the union of the Goddess and the God. Begins by the lighting of fires at moonrise on May Eve to light the way for summer. Medicinal and magickal herbs were burned to create smoke through which cattle were driven for purification/healing/fertility/protection. Old brooms are burnt and new ones dedicated. Wreaths burnt by people who wish healing. Traditionally a time for Handfasting - couples pledged for a year and a day - to seal their bond they'd jump over the bonfire and then a broom hand in hand. Much dancing and making merry - Maypoles erected and danced around. Bedecked with flowers, symbolizes the great fertilizing power of the Sun God. The entwining of the colored ribbons rep. the union of male and female - predominant colors are red and white; white for the Goddess and red for the God. There are usually 8 dancers, one for each Sabbat, paired into couples. May Queen crowned with flowers; the Green Man image is carried by her. May Garlands are made and worn - the Queen is crowned with a garland by the Lord of the Greenwood/Green Man. After the festivities, couples would go "a-maying" - off to the fields and the forests to make love and bring fertility to the land.

Ceremonies are exuberant;  dancing the Maypole, leaping a bonfire or cauldron to make wishes, honoring moon time and the connection with women and the Goddess, receiving gifts from the elements, honoring animals, making wreaths. Candles are red, incense is strawberry/patchouli/gardenia, altar cloth is red

Traditional foods are strawberries, cherries, creamy baked goods, deserts, oat or barley cakes.
