Caffeine in Tea - Although there is much debate about the effects of caffeine on our bodies, taken in moderation, it increases alertness and revives the spirits. Long ago, Buddhist monks in China were given green tea to drink to keep them alert during hours-long meditative periods. Tea does contain caffeine (unless specifically stated as decaffeinated). Even though tea, per pound of leaf, contains more caffeine than coffee per pound of bean, more ground coffee is generally used to brew a cup of coffee than tea is used for a cup of tea. Therefore, the average cuppa contains less than half the caffeine of the average cup of java.
