Essiac Tea Essiac formula is quite possibly the most important discovery of Western herbal medicine. It is and herbal to be attributed to Canadian nurse Rene Caisse who claimed that the formula was originally given to her by a native of Dubois medicine man. She named it after the backward spelling of her own last name. The four main herbs that make up Essiac are burdock root, slippery elm inner bark, sheep sorrel and Indian rhubarb root. They help normalize body systems by cleansing the blood, purging toxic buildup, promoting cell repair and aiding in effective assimilation and elimination. When they are combined it is believed that their individual beneficial aspects are enhanced. Rene spent her whole life treating cancer patients with this herbal tea at her clinic until she passed away in 1978 at the age of 91. Many of her patients reported that they were cured of cancer, while others claimed the tea relieved the pain and agony of their illness and made living with cancer much more bearable. When she presented her formula to the medical society, some doctors were so impressed by the result is that they petitioned the Canadian government in 1938 to pass a Bill to "authorize Rene Caisse to practice medicine in the province of Ontario in the treatment of cancer and conditions resulting therefrom." The bill failed to pass by three votes. Soon after, a legislative assembly passed "An Act for the Investigation of Remedies for Cancer" by which Rene would have to reveal her formula. Rather than complying with the authorities, she closed her clinic, later opening again at the behest of the Minister of Health. Thereafter, she was allowed to treat patients certified as terminally ill by their physicians. She kept the formula secret all those years, fearing it would be exploited. Finally, 14 months before she died, she signed the properties (formula, trademark name, notes) over to a Canadian company named Resperin, with hopes that it would be clinically validated and made available to all people. Given modern interest in alternative medicine and progress in scientific understanding of the human immune system, Essiac remains at the forefront of herbal formulas.
