Family -- Zingiberacea

Synonyms -- Galanga, small Galangal, Chinese Ginger, Ginger Root, Colic Root, East Indian Root

Herbal/folk tradition - It is used as a local spice, especially in curries; in India is employed in perfumery.  The root is currently in the British herbal Pharmocopoeia, indicated for dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, nausea and vomiting.

Aromatherapy/home use - Possible digestive upsets.

Other uses -- employed as a flavor ingredient especially in spice and meat products.  Occasionally used in perfumery work.

Distribution -- native to Southeast China, especially the island of Hainan.  Cultivated in China, Indonesia, Thailand and Japan.

Extraction -- essential oil by steam distillation from the rhizomes

Characteristics -- a green-yellow liquid with a fresh, spicy, camphoraceous odor.  It blends well with chamomile maroc, sage, cinnamon, all spice, lavandin, pine needle, rosemary, patchouli, myrtle, opoponax, and citrus oils.

Actions -- antiseptic, antibacterial, carminative, diaphoretic, stimulant, stomachic.
