Actions : Diaphoretic, hypotensive, astringent, diuretic, antiseptic, digestive stimulant, restorative for menstrual system

Constituents : Volatile oil, bitter sesquiterpenes, flavonoid glycosides, salicylic acid, asparagin, tannins, coumarins

Indications : The plant’s Latin name is derived from the Greek hero Achilles and during the Trojan wars, yarrow was used to treat wounds. It is one of the best diaphoretic herbs and is a standard remedy for helping deal with fevers; it lowers blood pressure so is good in thrombotic conditions, stimulates the digestion and tones the blood vessels; good in infections such as cystitis; use externally for wounds and eczema; make an infusion of the flowers for upper respiratory phlegm, use as an inhalation for hay fever and mild asthma; use 5-10 drops essential oil in 25ml infused St. John’s Wort oil as a massage oil for inflamed joints.

Folk Names : Arrowroot, Carpenter’s Weed, Death Flower, Devil’s Nettle, eerie, Field Hops, Hundred Leaved grass, Knight’s Milfoil, Militaris, Military Herb, Nosebleed, Old Man’s Mustard, Old Man’s Pepper, Snake’s Grass, Soldier’s Woundwort, Staunch Weed

Uses : Worn for protection and courage; hung over the bed ensures long lasting marriage; used in love spells and sachets; drunk to improve psychic powers.

!!Cautions : Avoid in pregnancy. In rare cases yarrow can cause severe allergic skin rashes, prolonged use can increase the skin’s photosensitivity.
