Actions : Sedative, hypnotic, anti-spasmodic, hypotensive, carminative, expectorant, diuretic, mild anodyne

Constituents : Volatile oil including valerianic acid, volatile alkaloids, iridoids

Actions : Nature’s tranquilizer, valerian calms the nerves without the side effects of comparable orthodox drugs; use to reduce tension, anxiety, over-excitability, hysteria; insomnia; relieves cramp and intestinal colic; relieves painful menses; migraine; rheumatic pain; add to mixes for high blood pressure where tension or anxiety is a contributing factor.

Traditional Folklore

Folk Names : All-heal, Amantilla, Bloody Butcher, Capon’s Trailer, Cat’s Valerian, English Valerian, Fragrant Valerian, Garden Heliotrope, Phu, St. George’s Herb, Set Well, Vandal Root

Uses : Used in sachets and hung about the home for protection; added to sleep pillows; add to love sachets; carry to prevent quarrels and promote calm.

!!Cautions : Do not take for more than 2-3 weeks without a break as continual use or high doses may lead to headaches and palpitations. As it enhances the action of sleep-inducing drugs, avoid if taking this type of medication. Do not confuse with the garden plant red “American” valerian which has no medicinal properties.
