St. John’s Wort                                                    Hypericum perforatum

Actions : Anti-inflammatory, astringent, vulnerary, sedative, analgesic, restorative tonic for nervous system

Constituents : Glycosides, volatile oil, tannin, resin, pectin, flavonoids

Indications : It is said that St. John’s Wort takes its names from the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem who used it to treat wounds on Crusade battlefields. Taken internally it has a sedative and pain reducing effect; used for neuralgia, anxiety, tension, irritability, menopausal changes, premenstrual syndrome, fibrositis, sciatica, rheumatic pain; externally as a cream or oil, use for wounds, bruises, varicose veins, burns, sciatica, sprains, cramps, to relieve breast engorgement during lactation, sunburn.

Traditional Folklore

Folk Names : Goat Weed, Herba John, Klamath Weed, Tipton Weed

Uses : Worn to ward off fevers and colds, to make soldiers invincible and to attract love; picked at Midsummer and worn to keep mental illness at bay and cure melancholy; hung at the window for protection against lightening, fire and negativity; placed under pillow by unmarried women would help them dream of future husband.

!!Cautions : Do not use where there is marked depression. Do not use if taking MAO inhibitors. Can cause dermatitis after taking internally and then exposing the skin to the sun.
