Myrrh                                                                        Commiphora molmol

“The marvelous effects that it worketh in the newe and greene wound, were here too long to set downe”

John Gerard   1597

Actions : Anti-microbial, astringent, carminative, anti-catarrhal, expectorant, vulnerary, anti-fungal, antiseptic, bitter

Constituents : Up to 17% essential oil, up to 40%resin, gums

Indications : An oleo-gum resin collected from the stems of bushy shrubs growing in Arabia and Somalia, myrrh has been regarded as one of the treasures of the East for millennia. Ancient Egyptians burned it in pellets to rid their homes from fleas and, most well known, it was one of the gifts said to be brought to the infant Jesus. It works primarily in the stimulation of the production of white blood corpuscles and secondarily it  has a direct anti-microbial effect. Used in the treatment of infections in the mouth such as ulcers, gingivitis, pyorrhea; catarrhal problems of pharyngitis and sinusitis; upper respiratory problems of head colds to glandular fever and brucellosis; use externally on wounds, abrasions, ulcers, hemorrhoids and as a chest rub for bronchitis and colds with heavy phlegm. As the resin dissolves in  water with difficulty, it should be powdered well if making an infusion; using a tincture is preferable however.

Traditional Folklore
