Licorice                                                                        Glycyrrhiza glabra

Actions : Expectorant, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, adrenal agent, anti-spasmodic, mild laxative, lowers blood cholesterol, cooling

Constituents : Glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, bitter, volatile oil, coumarin, asparagine, estrogenic substances, sterols

Indications : Been used medicinally since 500 BC and still features in official pharmacopoeia as a “drug” for stomach ulcers. Has a marked effect upon the endocrine system, the glycosides present having a structure that is similar to the natural steroids of the body, and do is used in the treatment of adrenal problems such as Addison’s disease. Effective in bronchial problems such as catarrh, bronchitis and coughs; used in allopathic medicine for peptic ulcers  and similarly in naturopathy for gastritis, ulcers, constipation and abdominal colic; use the tincture for arthritic, allergic conditions or lung disorders.

Uses : The sticks were chewed to induce passion, added to lust and love sachets.

!!Cautions : Not for prolonged use except under the supervision of a medical practitioner - may cause hypertension, edema, headache, vertigo and potassium depletion. Avoid in high blood pressure, hypokalemia, edema, cirrhosis of the liver and cholestatic liver disorders and diabetes. Do not used in pregnancy. Do not take if you have rapid or irregular heartbeat, or if you take digoxin-based drugs.
