Actions : Carminative, anti-spasmodic, anti-depressant, rubefacient, relaxant, anti-bacterial, analgesic, antiseptic

Constituents : The fresh flowers contain up to 0.5% volatile oil, tannins, coumarins, flavonoids

Indications : One of the most popular medicinal herbs since ancient times, it derives its name from the Latin lavare, to wash, and has many culinary and cosmetic uses as well. Use for nervous or stress headaches, the clearing of depression, nervous debility and exhaustion; soothe and promote natural sleep; give a weal infusion to babies for colic, irritability and excitement; use as a mouthwash for bad breath; add a few drops of the essential oil to chamomile cream for eczema; add a few drops of the oil to a little water for sunburn or scalds; add 1ml oil and 5 drops chamomile oil to 10 ml almond oil as a chest rub for asthmatic and bronchitic spasm; dilute 5-10 drops oil in water and uses as a hair rinse for lice, or a few drops of neat oil on a fine comb for nits; dilute 1ml oil in 25ml almond oil as a massage oil for painful muscles, the nape of the neck and the temples for headaches or migraine; apply undiluted oil to insect bites or stings.

Traditional Folklore

Folk Names : Elf Leaf, Nard, Nardus, Spike

Uses : Long used in love spells and sachets; clothing was rubbed with the flowers or sprigs placed in drawers to attract love; love notes were written on paper rubbed with the flowers; lavender water was used as a perfume or oil was added to the bath to attract love; used as an incense to induce sleep and induce peacefulness in the home; used in healing mixtures and purification baths.
