Burdock                                                          Arctium lappa

Burdock is familiar for its hooked burs which readily attach themselves to clothing – its botanical name is from the Greek arktos , to bear and lappa, to seize.

Actions : Alterative, mild laxative, diuretic, promotes sweating, anti-rheumatic, antibiotic, bitter

Constituents : Glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, volatile oil, polyacetylenes, resin, mucilage, inulin, alkaloids, fatty acids, vitamins A, B2

Indications : Most valuable remedy for treatment of skin conditions which result in dry and scaly skin such as eczema, psoriasis, if used over a long period of time; use as part of a wider treatment for rheumatic disorders; use in combination with digestive herbs to detoxify the system and stimulate digestion, also for urinary stones and gravel; as a poultice, apply to skin sores and leg ulcers; as a wash use a decoction for acne, athlete’s foot and ringworm.

Traditional Folklore

Folk Names : Bardana, Beggar’s Buttons, Burseed, Clotbur, Cockleburr, Happy Major, Hardock, Hurrburr, Personata

Uses : Was cast around the home to ward off negativity, added to protection sachets; roots were gathered in the waning moon, dried, cut and strung on red thread to wear as a protection necklace; leaves were placed to soles of feet to ward off gout.
