Boldo                                                Peumus boldus

Common names: Boldo, Boldina, Boldu, Baldina
Part Used: Bark, Leaves

Actions: Anodyne, Anthlemintic, Antibacterial, Antifungal, Antimicrobial, Antioxidant, Antiseptic, Cholagogue, Choleretic, Demulcent, Depurative, Detoxifier, Diuretic, Hepatic, Hepatotonic, Sedative, Stimulant, Stomachic, Tonic, Vermifuge

Uses : Indigenous uses of Boldo has been widely documented. For many years in Chile the fruit has been eaten as a spice, the wood used for charcoal and the bark has been used in tanning hides. It is also used in Chilean folk medicine as a anthelmintic against worms which activity has been attributed to its ascaridole content of the essential oil found the the leaves. In parts of Peru the leaves are used by indigenous tribes against liver diseases and to treat gallstones as well as a diuretic. The indigenous uses were verified early by researchers who showed that Boldo leaves had diuretic, stomachic and cholagogic properties.

Boldo leaves are the subject of a German therapeutic monograph which allows the use for mild gastrointestinal spasms and dyspeptic disorders as well as a subject of a US monograph which shows that Boldo causes clinically significant diuresis. Boldo's history in traditional medicine is well documented. The plant is used in homeopathy in the treatment of digestive disorders, as a laxative, choleretic, diuretic, and for hepatic disturbances. The leaves have been used for worms, and Dr. James Duke reports its traditional use for urogenital inflammations like gonorrhea and syphilis, as well as for gout, jaundice, dyspepsia, rheumatism, head colds and earaches.

In Brazilian herbal medicine today, Boldo is highly recommended as a digestive tonic, to eliminate gas and bloating, for digestive and liver complaints and as a diuretic. The Physicians' Desk Reference for Herbal Medicine cites that Boldo has been shown to be antispasmodic, choleretic and to increase gastric juices but is contraindicated in patients with bile duct obstructions and those with severe liver diseases.

Boldo is rich in phytochemicals including at least 17 known alkaloids.  Boldine has clinically been shown to stimulate digestion, and specifically to stimulate the production of bile, and its secretion from the gall bladder, and the secretion of gastric juice. Although boldine is largely attributed, one study indicated that a alcohol extract of Boldo leaves had a higher choleretic activity in rats over boldine alone. Antioxidant properties of the leaves has also been documented.

A recent human study demonstrated that Boldo relaxes smooth muscle and prolongs intestinal transit which validated again its traditional medicinal uses. Two clinical studies conducted in 1998 have again validated its uses in gastrointestinal disorders in animals and humans while demonstrating an antispasmodic effect. In 2000, researchers documented the liver protective and antioxidant properties of Boldo in a rat study with diabetic rats surmising, "Boldine may attenuate the development of diabetes in rats and interfere with the role of oxidative stress, one of the pathogeneses of diabetes mellitus." Another study on the chemical boldine in 2000 reported that in addition to its well-established antioxidant effects, boldine also displays time-dependently strong cytoprotective properties against chemically induced haemolytic damage (an antioxidant effect in the blood).

!! Cautions : Avoid during pregnancy. Not to be used by persons with gallstones, serious liver conditions or obstructions of the bile duct. Consult your medical practitioner before using.
