Basil                                            Ocimum basilicum

Actions : Antidepressant, antiseptic, stimulates the adrenal cortex, prevents vomiting, tonic, carminative, febrifuge, expectorant, soothes itching

Constituents : Volatile oil, tannins, basil camphor

Indications : Rub fresh leaves on insect bites; combine with a little motherwort and drink an infusion after childbirth to prevent a retained placenta; combine with skullcap for nervous conditions; combine with hyssop for coughs and bronchitis; use an inhalation for head colds; add 5-10 drops of oil to a bath for nervous exhaustion, mental  fatigue or melancholy.

Traditional Folklore

Folk Names : Albahaca, American Dittany, St Josephs Wort, Witches Herb

Uses : The scent of basil was said to soothe tempers between lovers. Added to love incenses and sachets and the fresh leaves were rubbed on the skin as a love perfume. In Eastern Europe it was thought that a young man would love any woman who handed him a sprig of basil. Thought to bring wealth to those who carried it in their pockets; used to attract customers to a place of business by placing over the door; thought to ensure fidelity; strewn on floors to ward off evil or negativity; given as a gift brought luck to a new home.
