Anise Seed                                          Pimpinella anisum

Actions : Expectorant, anti-spasmodic, carminative, parasiticide, aromatic, antiseptic

Constituents : Up to 6% volatile oils which include anethole, 30% fatty oils, choline

Indications : Eases griping, intestinal colic and flatulence. Bronchitis, tracheitis where there is persistent irritable coughing, whooping cough. Externally the oil may be used in an ointment base for the treatment of scabies. The oil by itself will help in the control of lice.

Traditional Folklore :

Folk names : Anneys

Uses : Placing a sachet of anise seeds under the pillow was said to ward off nightmares. Used in protection and meditation incenses. Placed around the magic circle it would protect those within. Used in purification baths. A sprig of anise hung on the bedpost would restore lost youth.
