“A water distilled from the root eases all pains and torments coming of cold and wind”   Culpepper 1653

Actions : Carminative, anti-spasmodic, expectorant, diuretic, diaphoretic, topical anti- inflammatory

Constituents : Essential oils including phellandrene and pinene, angelica acid, coumarin compounds, bitter principle, tannins

Indications : Expectorant for coughs, bronchitis, pleurisy – especially when accompanied by chills, cold or influenza; digestive disorders or as a liver stimulant.  Make a compress or oil and use for rheumatic or arthritic joints. As a decoction, use for anemia, menstrual irregularities or pains. Liver stagnation, or weakness after childbirth.

Traditional Folklore

Folknames : Archangel, Masterwort

Uses : Grown, the plant was protective. Used in all protection incenses. Sprinkled at the four corners of the house was thought to ward of negativity. The root was carried in the pocket as a gambling talisman.

!! Cautions : Avoid in pregnancy because it is a uterine stimulant; avoid in diabetes because of sugar content. It is heating, so can be contraindicated in “hot” conditions.Not to be used  by persons taking blood thinning agents.  The oil can increase photosenstivity so avoid excess exposure to sun if using externally.
